With the innovative aft ship design “AFT OPT” and our holistic full hydromechanical and hydrodynamical optimisation, it is possible to achieve significant fuel savings and emission reduction for ship newbuildings at virtually no additional cost. Economical, ecological and competitive advantages are obvious.
AFT OPT is a highly efficient modification of the aft ship’s shape. Ship’s cargo capacity (tonnage/TEU) remains untouched. Tailor made marginal bow adjustment and setup with optimised propeller and rudder designs help to maximise OPEX savings with AFT OPT.
The patent holder’s company LR Shipdesign AG, Switzerland, offers the complete hull resistance and propulsion optimisation with dedicated industry partners to eliminate interface problems between hull, propeller, rudder and main engine design.
AFT OPT technology is progressing further on the finish line with the next technology validation step for another ship type. In December 2021, the tank test of an optimised 76k dwt bulker took place at HSVA (Hamburg Ship Model Basin). The customer’s current “actual and best design” was improved by 4.3% to 4.7% (resistance measurement only!) at speeds of 13-15 kn at design draught. The patented design technology “AFT OPT” achieves an extremely high hydrodynamic quality. Less noise, less vibration, less cavitation and less negative impact on the main engine are positive “side effects” of the patented design.
This actually applies to all ship types. The technology was validated also i.e. for container ship designs by several model tank tests (Vienna Model Basin).
The substantially improved wake field and an approx. 9m³/second higher flow-rate towards the propeller disc (here: 7.0 m diameter) lead to an overall improvement of at least 6% compared to the best design. The tank tests for this will take place in the course of the next months.

LR Shipdesign AG provides access to this patented technology to qualified customers from the ship newbuilding sector. A limited number of selected investors, shipyards or designers will be able to participate in the next live-stream in March 2022 (tent.) or get access to the test results.
