Excellent STG “Ship Efficiency” Conference, Hamburg, 25/26 Sept. 2023
Hamburg based STG held an excellent conference with the topic “Ship Efficiency” (25/26 Sept. 2023).
QUOTE
The Schiffbautechnische Gesellschaft – STG – (The German Society for Maritime Technology) is a network and a knowledge platform for maritime technology. The core of the STG is the technical and scientific progress in ship technology and ship operation. The STG is non-profit.

Now,
as far as AFT OPT is concerned, we are grateful to receive very positive experts’ feedback regarding our (LR-Shipdesign AG, “LRSD”) innovation to reduce the fuel consumption of vessels by more than 6% due to our specific hull optimisation technology. Furthermore, we do all our CFD calculations in full scale and apply the holistic approach inclusive of propeller and rudder. ESD are not required to achieve great results.
We would like to thank in particular Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan Krüger, Chairman of the Board of STG and Head of Institute of Ship Design and Ship Safety, Hamburg University of Technology, and Dr. Hermann J. Klein, holding various positions in German and international maritime companies (a.o. Member of the Supervisory Board of MAN ES) in person for their encouragement regarding our technology approach.
Dr. Hermann J. Klein referred to the fact that no ship owner can predict the sailing pattern for their vessels. Even though ship newbuildings are tailor-made for specific trades, these trades change during the lifetime of vessels. Compared with other technologies such as wind assisted ship propulsion systems, only AFT OPT as an integral part of the ship’s body reduces the main engine power demand over a wide range of speed and is applicable for all drafts.
Prof. Dr. Krüger indicated that AFT OPT is an excellent solution already but he expects even better results (!) to reduce the fuel demand further. Many of his publications and scientific research analyse the impact of the aft ship body, wake flow etc. to the overall ship efficiency.
